How to Calculate Material Needed (in Cubic Yards)
To determine how much material your project requires, use the formula below:
Length × Width × Depth ÷ 27 = Cubic Yards Needed
Measure length and width in feet, and depth in inches (then convert depth to feet).
📏 Converting Depth (Inches to Feet)
3 inches = 0.25 ft (3 ÷ 12)
4 inches = 0.33 ft (4 ÷ 12)
5 inches = 0.42 ft (5 ÷ 12)
🌱 Depth Recommendation
If you’re unsure how deep your material should be, we recommend:
3 inches for standard coverage
4–5 inches for a thicker, longer-lasting layer
